Entry Requirements

Satisfactory completion of Level 4 Higher National Certificate in relevant computing-related subjects with a good attendance and an excellent College report. External applicants will be considered subject to matching of HNC units and satisfactory references. All students who are non-native English speakers and who have not undertaken their final two years of schooling in English, must demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to IELTS 5.5; Reading and Writing must be at 5.5 or equivalent. Mature students with appropriate related industry experience are encouraged to apply.

Who is the course for

Security is now a crucial part of business, and consequently the demand for highly skills and knowledgeable professionals is increasing. This Pearson BTEC L5 HND Computing-Security has been created to meet global demand for skilled individuals who understand how computers work, how networks are designed, built and configured, how Cybersecurity works in an age where the online world is so vulnerable to attacks and how software is used to monitor and secure these systems. It covers a broad range of computing specialisms and it will open the door to a vast range of careers within this industry. From day one, you will be immersed in an exciting, innovative environment where you will develop your theoretical and technical knowledge and skills, which will be directly relatable to your future career. You will learn how to help organisations to keep their businesses and customers safe with this practical course that will develop your professional and technical skills. The course offers opportunities for Cisco CCNAv7, Cisco (Cybersecurity Essentials), Cisco (IoT), etc. module certifications through Net Academy.

Course Content

On this course, you will cover a wide variety of theoretical and practical development skills. You will gain skills in identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities in computer networks and systems, as well as learning how to protect them against hacker attacks. You will combine your interest in forensics, computer networks and security to become the cyber security professional of the future. The unit combinations and the list of optional units are:

Mandatory Units:

  • Computing Research Project (Pearson-set)
  • Business Intelligence
  • Cryptography
  • Forensics
  • Information Security Management

Optional units

  • Cloud Computing
  • Network Security

Actual optional units may be subject to change. The course will also develop a broad range of transferable skills, which include communicating, teamwork, planning & organising, problem solving, IT skills and numerical techniques to build secure a systems that meet the needs of employers and preparing you for an exciting career.

Study Methods

  • 75% classroom-based learning supervised by a tutor
  • 20% work-based learning supervised by a tutor
  • 5% e-Learning supervised by a tutor in real time, guest speakers and field trips (Optional).

Students will attend college for 15 hours – over three days. Students are expected to complete approximately 22.5 hours per week of independent study (i.e. on research in LRC and completing assignments).

How is the course assessed

Assessment is through a series of assignments including 95% written assignments, 4% group work, 1% presentations. the grades in each subject unit are shown as:

  • distinction

The Pearson Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Computing-Security is recognised by higher education providers, as meeting admission requirements to many relevant computing-related courses.
