Electrical Installation

There are six Level 3 Performance Units to be assessed before you can gain the Experienced Worker qualification:

  • Apply Health, Safety and Environmental Considerations
  • Organise and Oversee the Electrical Work Environment
  • Apply Design and Installation Practices and Procedures
  • Terminate and Connect Conductors
  • Inspect, Test and Commission Electrical Systems
  • Apply Fault Diagnosis and Rectification

If you do not hold BS 7671:2018 and Initial Verification, these will need to be taken taken separately outside of the Experience Worker qualification.
  • Entry requirements

Currently working in the industry as a practicing electrician, with at least 5 years experience. Ideally candidates should have achieved a level 3 diploma or equivalent in electrical installation from home or overseas.
You will need to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and competence to the standard of the Level 3 electrotechnical apprenticeship.
There is a Skills Scan at the start of the process to assess this. The Skills Scan is designed to determine your eligibility for the Experienced Worker Qualification by helping you understand the depth of knowledge, skill and experience that will be expected to complete the assessment.
It has designed to help you avoid wasting money and struggling to complete qualification or the assessment process if this is not quite the right pathway for you.

It is also preferable for candidates to have already achieved the latest BS7671:2018 18th edition and C&G2391-51 (or combined C&G2391-52) Award in Initial Verification qualification, as you will need these to claim your qualification. If you do not currently have these then you will need to take these separately alongside this qualification.

  • Who is the course for?

Employed or self employed electricians who have been working in the industry for at least 5 years (not including time spent in full or part time training) who would like to gain the full, formal recognition of their skills or experience. This qualification would enable candidates to register for the AM2E which is the final stage of the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) to become a fully qualified electrician.

The qualification is not suitable for new entrants to the electrotechnical industry, apprentices, or those who have completed an electrotechnical technical qualification with less than last five years relevant experience as an practicing electrician.

If you are working in the industry but the Experienced Worker Assessment is not right for you at this time due to gaps in your knowledge or experience, do not give up! It may be you just need a more time or experience in certain areas before you are ready to apply. The college will guide you towards the best route for you.

  • Study methods

Portfolio building, on site assessment, professional discussions.

  • How is the course assessed?

To pass his qualification, you must provide evidence from a site of your previous work to demonstrate you can fully meet the performance requirements of each unit.
You’ll be assessed via a range of methods and an assessor will need to observe you at work on at least one occasion during the evidence gathering process.

Once you achieve this qualification your assessor will help you apply for the AM2E assessment by uploading your qualification and completing the online readiness checklist. The AM2E Assessment (£755 approx), which is separate to the Experienced Worker Qualification, is a practical assessment where you will have to attend a NET-licensed centre (this cannot be taken with your training provider). This can only be booked after the Experienced Worker qualification is achieved.

  • More information

This course does not include the AM2E Assessment, BS7671:2008 18th Edition or the C&G2391-51 Award in Initial Verification but all of these will be required in addition to the six assessment untis in this course to complete the Experience Worker Assessment – required to apply for the ECS gold card.
You will have 12 months from registration to complete this qualification and must achieve the AM2E before your ECS Experienced Worker card expires.

The AM2E is a practical assessment where you have to carry out a series of tasks covering safe isolation, installation, fault finding and inspection and testing, which are then marked by an assessor. It is identical to the AM2S assessment, which is taken by apprentices at the end of theirtraining programme. You can find out full details about each section of the AM2E and the tasks you will need to carry out on the NET website. The AM2E is available from NET’s network of licensed centres – visit the NET website to view the centre locations.

To be eligible to apply for the ECS gold card with this route the learner must have achieved:

    • This qualification: City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification,
    • A current industry recognised Level 3 Award in the requirements for electrical installations (BS 7671),
    • An industry recognised Level 3 Award in the Initial Verification and Certification of Electrical Installations (which may be achieved as part of a combined Award with periodic inspection and testing),
    • The AM2E Occupational Test (from NET).

  • Where Next – Job Opportunities

    Qualified Electrician/Approved Contractor

  • Where Next – Further Studies

Learners who successfully complete the Experienced Worker Qualification as well as the occupational competence assessment (AM2E), delivered by NET, will be judged to have met the eligibility requirements sufficient to apply for an ECS Gold Card from the JIB in the occupation that they have qualified.
Once you are registered on the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) programme and hold a valid ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment, you can gain an ECS Experienced Worker card, (brown stripe) which is valid for 18 months and cannot be renewed, so you may wish to defer this until you are close to completing this qualification. Candidates can also use this qualification to help register as an approved contractor with providers of a Competent Persons’ Scheme i.e. NICEIC, Napit, Elecsa etc.
