GCSEs/Functional Skills English & Maths

You will be taught how to write formal and informal letters, emails, articles and reports. There will be opportunities to improve spelling, punctuation and grammar as well. You will read a variety of texts and improve your speaking and listening skills by practising discussions and short presentations on familiar topics.

  • Entry requirements

    There are no set entry requirements. When you come to enrol, your reading and writing skills will be assessed for suitability and to agree the level you can study. Prior qualifications will be used where appropriate.

  • Who is the course for?

    If you want to pursue an Access course or an Apprenticeship and you are not quite ready, then this is the course for you. The English and maths for Work and Study is a course which allows you to gain a level 1 or level 2 qualification in Functional Skills maths and/or English in order to be ready for the next step: Access, an Apprenticeship or further study.

  • Study methods

    The course is delivered over 27 weeks of classroom taught lessons for 2.5 hours a week. You will be expected to combine this with a further 2 hours of guided study a week on an online platform called Century. Your teacher will assess Speaking and Listening in the classroom. At the end of the course, you will take an exam in Reading and Writing. All three elements need to be passed to gain the full qualification.

  • How is the course assessed?

    There will be two exam sittings in the year; March and June. You will take reading and writing in these exam sessions. You will be assessed in class for speaking and listening.

    Gaining a qualification in English at Level 1 will open doors for work and further study.
