GCSEs/Functional Skills English & Maths

You will learn how to develop your reading, writing and speaking skills. You will read a variety of texts, including letters, emails and articles. You will learn to write letters, emails and articles whilst improving your spelling, punctuation and grammar. You will practise discussion and presentation skills so you are able to give short presentations on topics that you are familiar with.

  • Entry requirements

    There are no set entry requirements. When you come to enrol, your reading and writing skills will be assessed for suitability and to agree the level you can study. Prior qualifications will be used where appropriate.

  • Who is the course for?

    Functional Skills part-time classes are for adults (over 19 year-olds) who need to improve their reading and writing skills. On the course, you will develop your writing of various pieces, which demand accuracy in spelling, grammar and punctuation. You will learn to write for real-life situations and gain confidence in reading, writing and speaking so that this will have a positive impact on future-prospects

  • Study methods

    The course is delivered over 15 weeks of classroom taught lessons for 2 hours a week. Your teacher will use a variety of materials, such as books and worksheets. You will be expected to combine this with a further 2 hours of guided study a week online through Century. Your teacher will assess Speaking and Listening in the classroom. At the end of the course, you will take an exam in Reading and Writing. All three elements need to be passed to gain the full qualification.
