FUNCTIONAL SKILLS - ENGLISH & MATHS

English and maths qualifications are essential, with many higher education institutions and employers demanding a high level of understanding in both subjects.

If you are 16-18 and studying a full-time programme at the college, our aim is to ensure that you leave college having achieved the best English and maths grades you can. Classes are timetabled to fit in with your main study programme and you will be in a group that is at the right level for you, based on your prior experience and grades. All students will be working towards attaining the equivalent of grade 4/5 (grade C) or above at GCSE.

If you are an adult (over 19 years old), looking to continue your education, or have been out of full-time education for some time, then we have part-time courses in Functional English and maths from Entry level to Level 2 -including GCSE. These will cover and develop, speaking, reading, writing and functional maths skills.

There are no set entry requirements, but students will undertake an initial assessment, to match them to an appropriate level. We will also take account of any prior formal qualifications in English and maths. Courses run over 2 semesters in the evening for Functional Skills. You can only study one subject per semester and will be the able to move up levels in the subject studied, subject to passing, or perhaps choose to switch subjects over in the second semester, to ensure both, English and maths skills are developed. For GCSE the programme runs over one academic year.
All courses will have a final exam/controlled assessment at the end of the course, with certificates of achievement provided once claims are able to be made with the Awarding Body.

These programmes require some out of the classroom studying as well, for this, we will provide access to an online software package (Century), which will support your learning and development in the subjects. Details of this will be provided at the start of the course.

If learners have been out of education for some time we also have some sample resources covering Functional skills and these can be found here. It would be useful to work through these resources in readiness for sitting the initial assessments and helping develop your confidence with the content of these programmes.

We look forward to seeing you apply and joining our evening classes
