Level 2 Functional Skills covers a range of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills which are essential for work and further study.
The course will cover persuasive techniques, writing formal letters, emails and reports, as well as articles and web forums. It will help you to express yourself to a high level of accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar. You will also be taught how to read efficiently and effectively. Your spoken language skills will be developed through discussions and presentations.
There are no set entry requirements. When you enrol, you will be assessed for suitability and to agree the level you can study. Prior qualifications will be used where appropriate.
Who is the course for?
These are part-time courses suitable for adults (over 19 years old) who have been out of full-time education for some time. Functional Skills is for students who need to improve their reading and writing skills. On the course, you will develop your ability to write various pieces, which demand accuracy in spelling, grammar and punctuation. You will learn to write for real-life situations and gain confidence in reading, writing and speaking so that this will have a positive impact on future prospects
The course is delivered over 15 weeks of classroom taught lessons for 2 hours a week. You will be expected to combine this with a further 2 hours of guided study a week on an online platform called Century. Your teacher will assess Speaking and Listening in the classroom. At the end of the course, you will take an exam in Reading and Writing. All three elements need to be passed to gain the full qualification.
How is the course assessed?
You will take a reading and writing exam at the end of the course. Your speaking and listening skills are assessed by your teacher in an in-class assessment.
Our next available course will be in September 2022.
