This course is part of the West London Institute of Technolofy (WLIoT) and provides the additional benefit of an extended work placement.

The Extended Diploma course is equivalent in size to three A Levels. 15 units of which 7 are mandatory and 3 are external. All units must be passed to achieve the qualification.

Year 1 - Foundation Diploma
Mandatory units:

  • Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team (Internal Assessment)
  • Engineering Product Design and Manufacture (External Assessment)
  • Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering (Internal Assessment)
  • Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems (Internal Assessment)

    Specialist Units:
  • Electronic Devices and Circuits (Internal Assessment)
  • Computer Aided Design in Engineering (Internal Assessment)


    Year 2 - Extended Diploma

    Mandatory units:
  • A Specialist Engineering Project (Internal Assessment)
  • Microcontroller Systems for Engineers (External Assessment)

    Specialist Units:
  • Further Engineering Mathematics (Internal Assessment)
  • Mechanical Behaviour of Non-metallic Materials (Internal Assessment)
  • Static Mechanical Principles in Practice (Internal Assessment)
  • Dynamic Mechanical Principles in Practice (Internal Assessment)
  • Principles and Applications of Fluid Mechanics (Internal Assessment)
  • Thermodynamics Principles and Practice
  • Entry requirements

    5 GCSEs grades 9-4 (grade A* -C) including English, maths, science and 2 of the following - design technology, business and ICT or BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate/Diploma in Engineering with overall MP, merit in Mathematics for
    Engineering. If necessary references may be taken up.

  • Who is the course for?

    This course is for students who are interested in a career in electromechanical engineering.

  • Study methods

    Each unit is studied through workshop and classroom activities. There is a weekly tutorial and private study to enable students to work on their own.

    Additional support is available in mathematics and English.

  • How is the course assessed?

    All the units are assessed by course assignments, which meet BTEC grading criteria for Pass, Merit and Distinction.

    After successful completion of this course you may transfer onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (180 credits) and then you may go to into higher education, or an apprenticeship or into a specialist area of employment in the mechanical engineering sector.
