In this course, the core component will cover paper 1&2 and an employer-set project.

Paper 1 covers the following units:

  • Essential mathematics for engineering and manufacturing
  • Essential science for engineering and manufacturing
  • Materials and their properties
  • Mechanical principles
  • Electrical and electronic principles
  • Mechatronics

    Paper 2 covers the following units:
  • Working within the engineering and manufacturing sectors
  • Engineering and manufacturing past, present, and future
  • Engineering representations
  • Engineering and manufacturing control systems
  • Quality management
  • Health and safety principles and coverage
  • Business, commercial and financial awareness
  • Professional responsibilities, attitudes, and behaviours
  • Stock and asset management
  • Continuous improvement
  • Project and programme management

    The Employer-set project relates to research, design, planning and presentation.

    In Occupational Specialism in mechanical engineering , the learners will be able to:
  • Analyse and interpret engineering and manufacturing requirements, systems, processes, technical drawings
    and specifications.
  • Evaluate systems, designs, components and processes, managing and integrating design information, proposals and specifications, to develop and improve mechanical engineering and manufacturing proposals and solutions.
  • Propose and design mechanical engineering and manufacturing systems, products, components, processes and solutions, considering requirements, constraints and context.
  • Collaborate to help manage, develop, test and quality assure mechanical engineering and manufacturing design information, systems, processes and outcomes.
  • Communicate proposals, design information and solutions, producing, recording and explaining engineering and manufacturing representations, systems, processes, outcomes, specifications and technical drawings.

  • Entry requirements

    GCSE grades 4-9 in five subjects including Mathematics, Science, English Language and 2 of the following - Design Technology, Business and ICT.
    Or BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Engineering with overall MM, and merit in Unit 10 Mathematics for Engineering, with GCSE grades 4-9 in Mathematics.

    This course is for students who are interested in a career in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Study methods

    T Levels will combine classroom theory, practical learning and a minimum 45-day industry placement with an employer to make sure you have real experience of the workplace.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Assessment overview:
    Learners will be assessed against the following assessment themes:

    • Health & safety
    • Design & planning
    • Manufacturing
    • Reports
      The core component will be assessed through a project set by employers in the industry and two externally-set exams. The occupational specialism in mechanical engineering is assessed through a project that is created in conjunction with relevant employers. The engineering common core is graded overall A–E plus ungraded (U). The Occupational Specialisms are graded overall Distinction, Merit, Pass and Ungraded. T Level qualification grade will be overall Distinction, Distinction, Merit, Pass and Ungraded.

    Apprenticeship or employment in the engineering sector.

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    Students can progress onto one of the following routes of further studies.

    • Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC in Mechanical Engineering at Uxbridge College / West London IoT, then progressing to Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Mechanical Engineering and then to top up degree at a university
    • BEng at university
    • Apprenticeship in an engineering discipline
