Uniformed Services

The Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND in Public Services (Criminology pathway) develops advanced knowledge and practical skills for careers within criminal justice and public services, or progression to a university top-up degree.

The course builds academic, professional, and research capability through a focused range of specialist units.

Students complete Professional Development, which strengthens ethical practice, reflection, and career planning, alongside a Research Project that develops independent enquiry skills within a criminology context.

Key subject units include:

  • Justice
  • Punishment and Rehabilitation
  • Serious and Organised Crime
  • Applied Forensic Psychology, exploring criminal behaviour, sentencing, rehabilitation, and crime prevention strategies.

    Applied learning is supported through Forensic Methods and Applications, focusing on crime scene investigation and evidence handling, and Management of an Outdoor Event, which develops leadership, planning, and risk management skills.

    Overall, the course balances theory and practice to prepare students for employment in public services or further academic study.
  • Entry requirements

    Successful completion of HNC Level 4 in Public Services or a similar course.

  • Who is the course for?

    This vocational qualification is designed for students with an interest in criminology-based subjects, blended with traditional uniformed services units.

  • Study methods

    The course will use delivery methods including:

    • Lectures
    • Seminars
    • Classroom discussions
    • Case studies
    • Group work / projects
    • Presentations
    • Guest speakers
    • Educational visits.

      There is a mandatory research project which runs the entire acedmic year. There are also planned residential study visits to support delivery and unit assessment.
  • How is the course assessed?

    All units will be individually graded as ‘pass’, ‘merit’ or ‘distinction’.

    To achieve a certain grade for the unit you must meet the assessment criteria set out in the specification. You will be informed of all assessment criteria at the beginning of each new unit via the assignment brief.

    The course has continual coursework with typical evidence, including written reports and essays, which will be submitted throughout the year.

    For students to be eligible for funding from Student Finance England, they must be studying on an eligible course at a provider registered with the Office for Students (OfS).   • Where Next – Further Studies

    At the end of the successful completion of your HND, there is potential to ‘top up’ to a degree or align with a third year placement with a university.

    The Level 5 Higher National Diploma is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements for many relevant public services-related courses, for example:

    • BA (Hons) Criminology
    • BA (Hons) Policing
    • BA (Hons) Public Services
    • BA (Hons) Leadership in the Public Sector
    • BA (Hons) Sociology and Criminology
    • BA (Hons) Uniformed and Public Services.
  • Fees
    • Home student fee: £6,500

    • International student fee: £8,625. There is also a registration fee for international students of £125.

      The fees quoted are for one year of study and include tuition, exam fee, materials, ID card (which gives access to the college and facilities e.g. library) and college registration.

      Fees will be no higher than those published, subject to an Access and Participation Plan being approved by the Office for Students.

      Whether you pay a 'home' or 'overseas' fee depends on whether you meet certain criteria. Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC) does not create the criteria for fee status. The fee status criteria is provided in regulations and guidance, published by the government.
