Beyond theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificate in Computing – Cyber Security offers students a comprehensive experience of the sector, equipping them for further study, professional training, or diverse career opportunities across public, private, and charitable organisations.
You will gain practical insights into key issues related to the design, analysis, and implementation of modern IT security systems. In addition, you will develop an understanding of how network security systems operate, how vulnerabilities can be exploited, and how security integrates into business and commerce through applied learning.
The units offered across both semesters are listed below.
Semester 1 - Feb 2026 until July 2026:
- Planning a Computing Project (Pearson-set)
- Cyber Security
- Database Design & Development
- Strategic Information Systems (optional)
Units delivered in semester 2 - Sept 2026 until Feb 2027: - Programming
- Networking
- Professional Practice
- Security.
Cisco “CCNAv7” materials are also embedded in the Cyber Security programme. The course will also develop a broad range of transferable skills, which include communicating, team work, planning and organising, problem solving, IT skills and numerical techniques.

Entry requirements
- GCSE English and Maths at C grade or above (or equivalent) and
- UCAS tariff score of 48-64 from a full-time Level 3 qualification such as BTEC, A-Level or an Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved further education institution in Maths, Physics, Engineering, Science, Computer Science, Electronic Systems or similar.
All students who are non-native English speakers and who have not undertaken their final two years of schooling in English, must demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to IELTS 5.5; Reading and Writing must be at 5.5 or equivalent.

Who is the course for?
This course is designed to prepare future security professionals by combining core principles with exposure to current technologies and solutions.
The program is intended for students who need to catch up after missing the usual September enrolment. -
Study methods
At Level 4, students will gain a broad understanding of key aspects of the computing sector through seven mandatory core units, including one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment, along with one additional optional unit.
- 75% classroom-based learning supervised by a tutor
- 20% work-based learning supervised by a tutor
- 5% e-Learning supervised by a tutor in real time
- Guest speakers and field trips (Optional).
Students will attend college for 15 hours – over two days. Students are expected to complete approximately 22.5 hours per week of independent study (i.e. on research in LRC and completing assignments).

How is the course assessed?
Assessment is through a series of assignments including:
- 95% written assignments
- 3% group work
- 1% presentations
- 1% time-constrained assessments.
The grades in each subject unit are shown as: pass, merit, distinction.

Where Next – Further Studies
The Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificate provides a solid grounding in Computing-Cyber Security at Level 4, with vendor-accredited certification and professional body membership, all of which students can build on and allow students to continue their studies to Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Computing -Cyber Security.

Fees
- Home student fee: £6,500
- International student fee: £8,990. There is also a registration fee for international students of £125.
The fees quoted are for one year of study and include tuition, exam fee, materials, ID card (which gives access to the college and facilities e.g. library) and college registration.
Fees will be no higher than those published, subject to an Access and Participation Plan being approved by the Office for Students.
Whether you pay a 'home' or 'overseas' fee depends on whether you meet certain criteria. Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC) does not create the criteria for fee status. The fee status criteria is provided in regulations and guidance, published by the government.
