In this one-year course, students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the engineering sector by studying Level 4 units. Altogether, this course has 8 mandatory units out of which three are core units and the remaining five are specialist units. All units have a 15-credit value.

Core Units (Mandatory):
• Construction Design Project Civil Engineering (Pearson-set)
• Science and Materials
• The Construction Environment
• Digital Applications for Construction Information
• Surveying, Measuring & Setting-out
• Mathematics for Construction
• Civil Engineering Technology
• Principles of Structural Design.

  • Entry requirements
    • One A Level either in maths, physics, or engineering with a grade C or above
    • Or a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction/Mechanical/General Engineering
    • Or an Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution
    • Or relevant work experience, or international equivalent of the above (UK ENIC equivalent qualification)
    • Or other related Level 3 qualifications like Plumbing, Gas, or Electrical Installation will be considered.

      Students with the Level 3 qualification in an engineering discipline with industrial experience may be considered.

      You should have GCSEs grade 9 - 4 (grade C and above) in English, maths and science or equivalent, plus you will take a college test in maths and general science/engineering in case of non-availability of GCSE qualification.

      All students who are non-native English speakers and who have not undertaken their final two years of schooling in English must demonstrate capability in English at a standard equivalent to IELTS overall 6 and 5.5 in each band.
  • Who is the course for?

    This one-year course is suitable for young/mature adults seeking to reskill/upskill in the engineering sector.

  • Study methods

    A mixture of theory by lectures/teaching (70%), practical demonstrations/workshops (25%), tutorials/virtual learning environments (3%), guest speakers and mini projects (2%) with 15 contact hours per week over 32 weeks during the academic year.

    Students are expected to complete approximately 90 hours per unit for each 15-credit unit of independent study (i.e. on research and completion of assignments) and unsupervised form of learning (e.g. e-learning, e-assessment, coursework, work-based learning, etc.).

    Assessment is through a series of time-constrained written assignments that involve:

    • Design projects
    • Reports
    • Practical
    • Simulations
    • Posters
    • Logbooks and presentations.

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    After completion of the HNC course students will be able to progress onto the Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering at HRUC (Uxbridge College)/ West London Institute of Technology, with a view to completing a full degree programme at university.

    Many professional bodies also recognise HNC for further professional study.

  • Fees
    • Home student fee: £6,820

    • International student fee: £8,990. There is also a registration fee for international students of £125.

      The fees quoted are for one year of study and include tuition, exam fee, materials, ID card (which gives access to the college and facilities e.g. library) and college registration.

      Fees will be no higher than those published, subject to an Access and Participation Plan being approved by the Office for Students.

      Whether you pay a 'home' or 'overseas' fee depends on whether you meet certain criteria. Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC) does not create the criteria for fee status. The fee status criteria is provided in regulations and guidance, published by the government.
