Engineering

Building upon successful programmes previously delivered by educational institutions in other global Amazon locations the Level 4 Data Centre Engineer programme is the only programme of its kind currently offered in the UK.

The programme comprises eight units, including four units selected from the Pearson BTEC Higher National Certificate in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) RQF qualification. This Level 4 course provides a foundation in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, combining technical knowledge with practical experience. The units delivered during the academic year are as follows:

  • Operating System Fundamentals
  • Science for Data Centres
  • Electrical Fundamentals
  • Functions and Calculus
  • Data Centre Essentials
  • Mechanical Air Cooling
  • Switchboard Operations.

    Experiential Learning:
    The programme will be free of charge for students. Eligible candidates (who have successfully completed assignments and actively engaged in learning) may have the opportunity to participate in a 14-week work-based learning experience within Amazon data centres, providing valuable hands-on industry exposure in addition to the academic courses.

    Work Experience Dates: From Jan 2027:
    In addition to the technical expertise, the course emphasises transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, planning, IT proficiency and numerical techniques.
  • Entry requirements

    GCSE English and Mathematics at grades 4- 9 / C and above (or equivalent).
    A UCAS Tariff score of 48–64, achieved through a full Level 3 qualification such as:

    • BTEC Diploma / Extended Diploma in Engineering (minimum 96 UCAS tariff points, which is equivalent to: DD or MMM)
    • A Levels
    • Access to Higher Education Certificate awarded by an approved institution.

      Some places may be reserved for suitable applicants from under-represented groups in Engineering.

      Mature applicants with relevant industry experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

      Applications are welcomed from individuals returning to education after a break in learning, including those returning to work or study following military service, caring responsibilities, family commitments, or other personal circumstances.

      Applicants should ideally have a background in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Science, Electrical / Electronic Systems, or related disciplines.

      Please note: HRUC will conduct interviews to determine suitability for the programme. The short-listed candidates will have a second interview with Amazon. Successful candidates will be required to undergo Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks.
  • Who is the course for?

    The new employer-sponsored programme, developed and delivered by HRUC, have been designed to develop the specialist technical skills required by the fast-growing data centre industry.

    This course is ideal for individuals seeking a career in the Engineering sector, with a focus on the foundation skills required for entry-level technical roles in data centres. Designed in collaboration with Amazon experts, the curriculum builds on successful programmes previously delivered in other global Amazon locations.

    Data Centre Engineers are expected to be technically proficient problem-solvers, capable of working under pressure and skilled in clear technical communication and reporting.

  • Study methods

    A mixture of theory by:

    • Lectures / teaching (70%)
    • Practical demonstrations / workshops (25%)
    • Tutorials / virtual learning environments (3%)
    • Guest speakers and mini projects (2%).

      15 contact hours per week over 32 weeks during each academic year. Students are expected to complete approximately 90 hours per unit for each 15-credit unit of independent study (i.e. on research and completion of assignments) and unsupervised form of learning (e.g. e-learning, e-assessment, coursework, work-based learning, etc.).

    • Duration: One academic year
    • Days in the Week: Monday and Wednesday
    • Schedule: Full time face-to-face plus the work experience which will be organised outside the classroom with Amazon.
    • Work Experience: Will take place on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with start dates to be confirmed.
    • Payment details to be provided to successful candidates following enrolment.
  • How is the course assessed?

    Assessment is continuous and coursework-based, including:

    • Written assignments
    • Design and development projects
    • Practical tasks and simulations
    • Reports and logbooks
    • Posters and presentations
    • Time-constrained tests.

      Each unit is graded as: Pass, Merit or Distinction.

      Students will receive Pearson unit module certificate for 4 HNC Engineering units and professional certificate from HRUC for the remaining 4 units.

      This programme, developed in partnership with Amazon, prepares learners for entry-level roles as a Data Centre Engineer. Participants will gain hands-on experience during the work experience and receive career development support, including:

    • CV preparation
    • Interview skills training
    • Career planning workshops.
