Level 2 Functional Skills covers reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. You will be taught how to write persuasively and to a high degree of accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar. You will learn to write formal emails, reports and letters as well as developing your reading skills. Speaking and listening skills are developed through discussions and presentations.
There are no set entry requirements. When you enrol, you will be assessed for suitability and to agree the level you can study. Prior qualifications will be used where appropriate.
Who is the course for?
If you want to pursue an Access course or an Apprenticeship and you are not quite ready, then this is the course for you. The English and maths for Work and Study is a course which allows you to gain level 1 or level 2 qualifications in Functional Skills maths and English in order to be ready for the next step: Access, an Apprenticeship or further study.
The course is delivered over 27 weeks of classroom taught lessons for 2.5 hours a week. You will be expected to combine this with a further 2 hours of guided study a week on an online platform called Century. Your teacher will assess Speaking and Listening in the classroom. At the end of the course, you will take an exam in Reading and Writing. All three elements need to be passed to gain the full qualification.
How is the course assessed?
There will be two opportunities to take the reading and writing exams; once in March and once in June. Speaking and listening is assessed in class by the teacher through an assessment.
Our next available course will be in November 2022.
