Uniformed Services

This course provides the knowledge and practical skills relevant to careers in the police, fire service, armed forces, border force, emergency planning, local government, and other related sectors. The course includes specialist criminology-focused units that support progression to university at Level 6 following successful completion of both the HNC and HND.

  • Criminal Law and Justice Systems
  • Theories of Crime

  • Outdoor Skills Development.
  • Entry requirements

    GCSE Maths and English at grade 4 (grade C) or above (or equivalent) and a UCAS Tariff score of 48-64 from a full Level 3 qualification such as an NCFE, BTEC, A Level or an Access course.

  • Who is the course for?

    This vocational qualification is designed for students with an interest in criminology-based subjects, blended with traditional uniformed services units and outdoor skills that link to a wide range of public service roles.

    Learners will gain a broad understanding of the public services sector, including its structure, policies, and preparation procedures. This qualification is ideal for those who are aiming for future leadership or management roles and enjoy applying critical thinking and theory to practice, while working collaboratively in a dynamic environment.

  • Study methods

    The course will use delivery methods including lectures, seminars, classroom discussions, case studies, group work / projects, presentations, guest speakers and educational visits. There are planned residential study visits to support delivery and unit assessment.

  • How is the course assessed?

    All units will be individually graded as ‘pass’, ‘merit’ or ‘distinction’. To achieve a certain grade for the unit you must meet the assessment criteria set out in the specification. You will be informed of all assessment criteria at the beginning of each new unit via the assignment brief.

    The course is continual coursework with typical evidence, including written reports and essays, which will be submitted throughout the year.

    There are additional trip fees of £550 for an overseas residential.

    Links with employers include: Metropolitan Police, Surrey Fire and Rescue, the Armed Services including the RAF and the British Army.

    For students to be eligible for funding from Student Finance England, they must be studying on an eligible course at a provider registered with the Office for Students (OfS).   • Where Next – Job Opportunities

    The course allows the opportunity to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to gain employment in areas such as the police, fire service, armed forces, emergency management, local government, and other related fields.

    It can open doors to specialised roles within specific areas of public services. For example, emergency management, leadership and management and criminology.

    Whilst studying, students will be encouraged to partake in their own work placement to gain further knowledge and skills required for the industry. The course emphasises the importance for students to maintain focus on coaching and mentoring, as well as reflective practice, to facilitate transition into the workplace and their chosen career.

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    The course offers students the opportunity to progress to a Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Public Services which is an additional year long course and can be undertaken at Uxbridge College.

    After completion of the HND in Public Service there is opportunity for learners to 'Top Up' their degree at various Universities. Typically, programmes include a BCs/BA in Public Services or relevant subjects such as Criminology.
