This course will encourage you to develop a research file that includes experimental samples and design development work.
You will build confidence in applying a range of sewing techniques, become proficient in the safe and effective use of sewing machines, and create a re-vamped garment of your own design.
Topics covered include:
- Exploring current fashion trends, creative concepts, and research and design methodologies
- Understanding how sustainable practices can be integrated into the design process
- Investigating successful sustainable fashion brands and designers, and their approaches to ethical production.
- Learning techniques for up-cycling and transforming existing garments into innovative new designs.

A keen interest in the subject area. This course is ideal for anyone who has some previous knowledge and basic skills of sewing by hand and using a machine.

You will be provided with an individual kit containing:
- Calico
- Pattern paper
- Interfacing
- A tape measure
- Tailor’s chalk
- A fine liner
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Pins
- Snips
- Paper scissors
- Fabric shears
- Hand sewing needles
- A notebook
- A display file.
You may need to purchase your own fabric and trimmings for your final re-vamped garment. You will also have access to the college’s workshop facilities and equipment throughout the course.
Course duration: 6 weeks / 36 hours (6 hours per week).
