GCSEs/Functional Skills English & Maths

This course is delivered over 27 weeks with classroom taught lessons for 2 hours a week. You will be expected to combine this with a further 2 hours of guided study a week.

Your teacher will assess Speaking and Listening in the classroom. At the end of the course, you will take an exam in Reading and Writing. All four elements need to be passed to gain the full qualification.

  • Entry requirements

    There are no formal entry requirements but we will assess your level of English and Maths to make sure you are working at the appropriate level for the course. This is to ensure you are able to meet the course requirements.

  • Who is the course for?

    These are part-time courses suitable for adults (over 19 years old) that have been out of full-time education. Functional Skills is for students who need to improve their reading and writing skills.

    On the course, you will develop your writing of various pieces, which demand accuracy in spelling, grammar and punctuation. You will learn to write for real-life situations and gain confidence in reading, writing and speaking so that this will have a positive impact on future-prospects.

  • Study methods

    This is a face-to-face in person course and there will be access to Teams where you will find resources and dditional tasks to complete for homework and additional study.

  • How is the course assessed?

    There are 2 exam sessions in March and June. You will take reading and writing exams in these sittings and you will also take speaking and listening exams from March.

    Gaining confidence in English is extremely important for further studies and employment opportunities. By achieving a Level 1 qualification, you will have more opportunities for work and further study.

    If you pass Level 1 then you can look at either a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification or possibly GCSE.
