Motor Vehicle Maintenance

This course is designed to address the lack of recognition of current competence which doesn’t allow technicians without a Level 3 qualification to progress in their careers and become a MOT Tester.

A technicians’ competence is benchmarked against National Occupational Standards regarding the following systems:

  • Brakes
  • Suspension
  • Steering
  • Wheels and tyres
  • Emissions
  • Electrics
  • Body/Chassis.
  • Entry requirements

    This course is for students who are 21+ years of age and have the ability to demonstrate competency at a technical level through their work experience (ideally 4+ years).

  • Who is the course for?

    Normally to be able to become a MOT Tester, a technician needs to have four years experience and a Level 3 qualification. This Assessment is for Motor Vehicle Technicians who are 21+ years’ of age, who have the experience required to work competently, but do not hold a qualification/accreditation scheme to prove it.

  • Study methods

    Theory and practical sessions to prepare for the assessment. The candidate must provide their own boots and overalls.

  • How is the course assessed?

    Technicians will have to achieve the following two mandatory units to prove their competence at the level expected according to National Occupational Standards:

    • 3428-101 Knowledge of Pre-Vehicle Testing Online Multiple-Choice Test
    • 3428-102 Skills in Pre-Vehicle Testing Practical Skills Tests.

    This is a full-cost commercial course - all students pay fees; no concessions are available.
    The practical assessment will take place on a Saturday.
    Fee refunds for commercial courses will not be awarded after two weeks before the scheduled start date of the course, unless the course is cancelled by the College.

    You can progress towards becoming an MOT Tester (Authorised Examiner) or Authorised Examiner Designated Manager.

  • Where Next – Further Studies

    Successful learners will be able to progress into City & Guilds (3428-02) Level 2 Award in MOT Testing to become MOT Testers.
