This course is delivered over 27 weeks with classroom taught lessons for 2 hours a week. You will be expected to combine this with a further 2 hours of guided study a week.
Your teacher will assess Speaking and Listening in the classroom. At the end of the course, you will take an exam in Reading and Writing. All four elements need to be passed to gain the full qualification.

Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements but we will assess your level of English and maths to make sure you are working at the correct level to take the course. This is to ensure you are able to meet the course requirements.

Who is the course for?
These are part-time courses suitable for adults (over 19 years old) that have been out of full-time education. Functional Skills is for students who need to improve their reading and writing skills.
On the course, you will develop your writing of various pieces, which demand accuracy in spelling, grammar and punctuation. You will learn to write for real-life situations and gain confidence in reading, writing and speaking so that this will have a positive impact on future-prospects. -
Study methods
Your course will be face-to-face in class. There will be access to Teams where there will be lesson slides and additional activities.

How is the course assessed?
There will be two chances to take the reading and writing exams in March and June. The speaking and listening assessment will take place after March.

Where Next – Job Opportunities
Functional Skills Level 1 and Level 2 are well thought of by employers and educational establishments. Gaining a Level 1 Functional Skills qualification is extremely beneficial and will help you to gain confidence and progress in employment or further studies.

If you pass Level 1 then you can look at either a Level 2 Functional Skills qulaification or possibly GCSE.
